Sense8, the Wachowski Sisters’ sexy Netflix sci-fi-action series, built a devoted cult following in the queer community thanks to its inclusive cast of characters — which included representation for every letter in LGBT. But this month we learned the show was even more inclusive than we initially thought as actor Brian J. Smith (who played straight-but-flexible Officer Will Gorski but now appears on the USA Network’s Jason Bourne-connected spy thriller Treadstone) talks about coming out in Attitude magazine’s 2019 holiday. While his story does have a happy ending, his backstory is depressingly familiar…
“I heard all the names: p***y, f****t. “I could never be who I was. I was constantly having to check myself and make sure I wasn’t looking at someone too long or making someone feel uncomfortable.
“I had to be very, very careful about telling people the truth about myself.”
— Brian J. Smith (Attitude)
After finding a vital outlet for self-expression in acting, Brian, who landed his breakout role playing police officer Will Gorski in Netflix’s Sense8 in 2015, recalls how his family were overwhelmingly supportive when he eventually came out to them at the age of 30.
The part about being careful not to look at someone for too long hit me where I lived. The closet is a prison.
